Sidonius Apollinaris Beyond the Companion: From Archaeology to Popular Culture

to mark the publication of The Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris, edited by Gavin Kelly and Joop van Waarden and published by Edinburgh University Press.

Date: Thursday, 14 May 2020

Venue: Radboud Campus Nijmegen

Arrivals: 10:00‒10:30h. The programme runs from 10:30 to 18:00h. Coffee, tea, lunch, and drinks are provided for. The day aims to explore avenues of future research on Sidonius and his times, and will be concluded with a public lecture.

Speakers include Lucy Grig (Edinburgh) on popular culture, DaniëlleSlootjes (Nijmegen) on dioceses in Gaul, Caroline Michel d’Annoville(Paris) on Vaison-la-Romaine, and Jeroen Wijnendaele (Ghent) on political murder.

A distinctive element is a series of short pitches by early-career as well as established scholars to outline the panorama of Sidonius research under way or about to be undertaken. There are a few free slots left. We welcome proposals at j.vanwaarden@let.ru.nl.

Public lecture at 16:30h: Mark Vessey (Vancouver) speaking about“Sidonius, or The Big Beyond”. All welcome.

Conference fee: € 20 (lunch and consumables). We appreciate timely prior notice of participation in view of our preparations (j.vanwaarden@let.ru.nl).

  • Aaron Pelttari, co-editor with Gavin Kelly of the new series Edinburgh Studies in Later Latin Literature (https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-edinburgh-studies-in- later-latin-literature-html.html) will be present to talk about this opportunity. The series will feature ground-breaking scholarship on Latin literature from the later Roman and post-Roman world. Planned volumes include scholarly monographs and editions with commentaries. In this series, modern critical and theoretical methods will be used to provide new interpretations of the surviving corpus of Latin literature; approaches envisioned include textual history, transmission, philology in the broad sense, and reception studies.
